Applying the Oxygen Mask Principle in 2016

Applying the Oxygen Mask Principle in 2016

When was the last time you took a minute to focus on yourself? If you had to think about this for any length of time, its been too long.

Many of the people I work with everyday have become overwhelmed with the challenges of balancing demands of work, family, paying the bills and all the myriad of challenges presenting in our everyday lives. As a result, they often put the health on the “back burner.”

I often find when working with people just like you, the common theme is I haven’t had a day to myself, where I focused on the things I love to do in far too long. It causes me to take a step back and wonder what it is all worth?

If we don’t take the time to focus on ourselves, so we can be the best physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, how do we expect to be our best for the people that need our attention the most? For the people we love and care about?

As a result of neglecting yourself, health and your ability to perform and live up to the expectations of those around you soon becomes apparent. We start to lose hope, fall into a state of compromise and ultimately become unhappy with the current state of affairs.

The inability to adapt to everyday stress begins to soon rule our thoughts and actions and ultimately interferes with our relationships at home and at work.

Time is a very important factor and should be well respected. We all have a limited amount of time, to do the things we were born to do. Everything takes time. No one knows how much time each of us may have, but the cool thing is we do have choices that present everyday which can lead us in one of two directions; one in the direction of success, life, love, health and well-being or two, down the path of feeling over-whelmed and burdened. We begin to neglect the things that are most important to us, sometimes to a point we forgot about the person we once were.

So what is the point? Why are we talking about this? Sometimes it is more comfortable to say, well that’s just the way life is, or maybe you have been told by an authority you will just have to learn to deal with it. Often times, many of you in situations like these have become over-ridden with pain such as stress headaches for example. Often feeling a generalized feeling of fatigue and tiredness or maybe even a state of depression. Frequently, when the mental and physical state become compromised, the body will begin to develop symptoms. Symptoms are often perceived with a negative connotation and many look to suppress them as quickly as possible. Symptoms are a way for the body to bring to our attention a state of affairs requiring change. Pain, although uncomfortable, serves a purpose.

In my experience with dealing with patients as described above, many people have been given a chemical solution for a non-chemical cause. This can often compound the effects of the symptoms we are already experiencing and can make matters worse.

I want to offer a different solution, one you most likely have never heard about. It involves the master system of the body, the central nervous system. Now most of us know the important role the brain plays in helping us move and stay alive, and others may have never taken the time to consider such a thought. In my experience, the majority of people I work with daily have developed chronic conditions over time. They have sought conventional treatments which aim to suppress symptoms without first addressing the cause and conventional treatments often overlook the vital role the nervous system plays in our health.
